The vitality of drawing
Exploration. Drawing as an exploratory act is important in and of itself, and also as a way of figuring out what may or may not be important in a follow-up/larger piece of work. For example a painting or for print making.
Celebration. Mark making, in sketchbooks or on large sheets of paper is a celebratory process, either reacting to what is in front of one or what is in one’s head at the time. It is an immediate response.
Recording. Since 2004 I have been lucky enough to travel extensively overseas and sketchbooks have always been a part of the adventure. Carving out 10 minutes before meeting to make a drawing. A practice that over time was seen as quite normal for me by friends and colleagues. As a result there are over 80 sketch books on the shelf.
Several of these sketchbooks are free to download as PDFs.
